Irish road signs and their meanings
Every road sign, road marking and traffic light pictured in the Irish Driver Theory Test (DTT) questions, 143 in all, grouped by type. Select a sign to see its question and a full explanation.
How to read Irish road signs
A sign’s shape and colour tell you what kind of message it gives, even before you can make out the symbol.
- Red circle
- A limit or something you must not do, such as a speed limit, no entry or no overtaking. Speed limits are in km/h.
- Blue circle
- An instruction you must follow, such as turn left, keep left or pass either side.
- Octagon and inverted triangle
- Stop is the only eight-sided sign and Yield the only inverted triangle, so you can recognise both from their shape alone.
- Yellow diamond
- A warning of a hazard ahead, such as a bend, a junction, a school or animals on the road.
- Orange diamond
- A temporary warning at roadworks, such as a lane closure, a flagman or loose chippings.
- Blue rectangle
- Motorway signs, and bus, tram and cycle lane signs. Direction signs are blue on motorways, green on national roads and white on regional and local roads.
- White and yellow lines
- Never cross a continuous white centre line; cross a broken one only when it is safe. A single yellow edge line limits parking at the times shown on a nearby plate, and a double yellow line means no parking at any time.
